i had two options: run back with my tail between my legs or continue south. trapped in a shitty border town, completely fucking lost, relatively broke, knowing maybe three sentences in spanish...i was in way over my head. i chose the former. i decided to go back to the border and somehow tell the americans that i'd been in mexico for one day, traveled 300km to another border city and hope they'd detain me for only a couple hours. what's the worst thing they could do? fly me back to canada?

the problem was that it was past midnight and i hadn't a clue as to where border was. my solution was to find a place to crash and go back in the morning. i walked for miles along the main road, looking for an empty lot or a dilapidated house to sneak in when i found a (abandoned? it's hard to tell here...) soccer field. fuck yeah, i'd sleep there! i hoist myself over the cement wall with some difficulty and i find myself half over the field and half over the road when i hear a loud honk. i almost shit my pants. i look over and i see a black car, and i think of one thing. the police. i know i can't run. if i hop into the field there would be no way out, and it's not like i can outrun anyone with this backpack...i jump back to the road, completely resigned and ready to be thrown into mexican jail because there's no way i am surrendering my 200 pesos. the man says something in spanish and i say, just like every other retarded gringo tourist ever, NO HABLAS ESPANOL. where are you going man? asks the driver. to sleep, i say. no man, you need a ride? i'm going to caborca. come with?

it's easy to become superstitious when you're hitchhiking. i have not become superstitious at all, but let's say it: it's easy to briefly sink into that mode of thinking when you're living like this. caborca was around 350km away and a bit more outside of the border area that i hear is so bad for my health. a sign? yes, i will go with you! knowing that i have resigned myself to do what i set out to do: GO SOUTH.

tomorrow i leave hermosillo without a real destination other than punta arenas, chile. i know things will change more and more. i don't believe in luck, but if you feel so inclined wish me strength and valour and amazing language acquisition skills or some stupid dramatic shit like that.

last night i dubstepped at a "art bar" (think about that for a sec, who do you think inhabits this bar? result: majority of people standing in the back....standing.....having a real good time im sure) and i was pretty fucked on oxys which is pretty cool and girls here are basically sluts which is also pretty cool, juke juke juke, but like. the soundsystem. it was decent enough for a bar playing dubstep (which is to say, not very good but acceptable for five bux, comparable to that yuppie club in gastown) but one of the djs played scorn's glugged with some hilarious club rap over it, which was actually pretty fucking awesome BUT the system was like, totally not enough for it. when i hear scorn on a big system (never have before actually!!!) i want to be torn apart. i honestly kind of felt it was a disrespect to m. harris to play his music on anything that didn't make your chest rattle (discounting home use. no doubt). i wanted the first time i heard scorn with a decent system to put me into a coma. but beggers cant be choosers and it was still pretty okay.

i dont know why im posting this but sup dubbers. i'm about to leave to mexico or louisianna or a little "intentional community" in a place that i can't spell but call "sassketball". probably mexico. it depends ...

soooooo last night i got drunk and talked all about solar panels with some dude on the streets of portland after hitching a ride with the sweetest linux geek ever then me and a friend went to some shitty strip club and there was this 45 year old stripper and APPARENTLY here they ONLY GET PAID IN TIPS which is just fucked, really, so we left there pretty quickly and now im on a computer and im thinking of going to this 4 story tall used book store or the anarchist cafe or something.

just a week in and things are so wonderful. my materialist world view remains intact but the sheer amount of awesome things that happen are almost unreal...one is either forced to accept some sort of cosmic order OR that maybe life can be pretty alright. this is tough.

I was meaning to put up a colorful picture because Ol' DUBBA has been looking rather black and white lately. But, I came to the conclusion that all of my pictures are all green. That's only one color and not many else. So here's a picture that I created.

pixels come in many different colours even though they describe the same shapes. a red circle is only different from a blue circle because of the colours. as a preprocessing step prior to neural analysis images must be converted into a map of change gradients or else the network fails as a classifier. changes are evaluated across the plane and reconstituted with thresholds for each magnitude of change. mustaches present their own special challenge. I haven't solved that one yet.

i am going to redesign my robo brain. i've learned a lot about neural networks, but i'm going to redesign with a slightly new paradigms. NNs aren't very good at coming up with original ideas, but very good at identifying patterns...i.e. face recogition. the idea is going to be, train a neural network to recognize certain objects... such as faces, octopuses, boobs. Then use this as the fitness value for a completely different algorithm for image generation. The NN will tell the image generating algorithm how well it's doing, and evolve in that direction.....

One of the problems with neural nets is that they have a hard time "remembering" things they've learned before. Since i'm not using neural nets to control robots or do anything productive aside from generate weird images, and I don't give a shit about computational accuracy, I decided that the "hack" solution was to create a long term memory on disc. A neural net may not be able to remember megabytes worth of image data, but it CAN remember the three things needed to access it's "long term" memory, which is a) an image index (which picture to 'look at' for reference, b) the location(x,y) in the image it 'wants' to 'look at' and c) how relevant, and thus, how much influence this input will have on the various neurons in the network.

This is the result of giving it a picture of abe lincoln to "study". I hope you like it!!!!!!
